Because Borrow Season is about growth, not just having fun today's activity was paying off the rest of my fines! In 2012, I was riding dirty- registration was expired and due to a seatbelt ticket I hadn't paid they had suspended my license. Which I didn't know bc I never changed my address with the DMV when I moved (yeah, I know I know) and when I got stopped that one bad decision snowballed. My car got towed, I ended up with fines and when all wad said and done (not including fines) I'd paid a couple grand.
I cried so hard that the cop that stopped me drove me to the Providence line so I wasn't stranded. For the next four months my mom took me to work and my dad picked me up. EVERYDAY! I ended up living in their couch for over a year after that trying to get my life right.
I don't know if it's right, but I have learned so much. Not just about me, but my parents and got to see them as people. The amount of growth that happened in our relationship at that time was unparalleled. So today when I handed over my card at the courthouse I knew that I was not the same Coco that got those tickets. But I thank her for the opportunity to grow, learn and be uncomfortable enough to want more. My parents, I'll never be able to thank enough, but I am ever grateful for their support and love at a time when life could've just as easily fell apart.
So if you are struggling and doing what you can, please know that there are people who love you and support you. Know that everything is a lesson and sometimes we have to learn the hard way, but never stop moving!
